This easy to understand overview and introduction to optics uses William Wolfe's "Optics Made Clear" ISBN 0-8194-6307-8 SPIE Press, Bellingham Washington, and materials from Paul Hewitt's "Conceptual Physics chapters 26-31. Hewitt's book is up to about th 11th edition, but any of the earlier editions should be adequate, and readily available inexpensively on the internet. Wolfe's "Optics Made Clear" gives a very wide overview of optical phenomena, both man-made and natural. Hewitt's "Conceptual Physics" will provide some of the underlying science without getting into heavy mathematical materials.
